Daniel Milstein Photography

About Dan:

“Photography is a journey in images, which allows me to share my view of the world in architecture, nature or the human experience.”

My inspiration:
“My earliest memory of realizing photography was my passion was when I was 5 years old holding a late 1971-built Nikon F by the barrel, my father standing over my shoulder, turning the rings, showing me how to look through the viewfinder and focus. This marked the start of my unplanned journey from little kid playing with a camera to big kid making a living with a camera.

It was a simple point-and-shoot on which my dad began to teach me about composition for landscapes. When I was 10 years old, standing on a dirt road my father illustrated for me how a simple shift in perspective can drastically transform the story a photo is capable of telling. This knowledge changed how I approached photography, altering my innocent snapshots into a more mature awareness of the world around me. I fell into a comfortable pattern with my dad who assessed my work while I continued to explore the art and practice of taking photos.   It’s a routine that continues even to this day.

Another key influence on my artistic sensibility and approach to my craft was a wonderful photography teacher whose assignment to, “photograph something from an angle most people wouldn’t consider.”   This philosophy is something I regularly employ in my work today; whether it’s revealing a home’s hidden artistry, capturing a skier’s descent down a mountain, suspending time for a dancer on stage, or sharing an intimate moment between a bride and groom.

Today, my journey has come full-circle: the passion that started with my father’s 1971 Nikon F is now my lifeblood. Shooting with my mobile studio, I am inspired everyday as I partner with clients for real estate and architectural shoots, sporting events, dance performances or product photography. While that camera will never join me on a shoot today, it’s next to me now as a reminder of why I do this. My father, my idol, passed me that camera and gave me a little nudge to learn to use it.”
